Tangata Group Election 2024 Statement
This week, communities across the United States and around the world have responded to the 2024 presidential election results with a wide range of reactions to this pivotal moment in history. These reactions speak to a history of political division and systemic inequities that trace back to the founding of the United States. The board members of Tangata Group acknowledge the importance of civic and global engagement in shaping the future and recognize the duty to address the deep-seated issues within the U.S. political, economic, and social systems.
Tangata Group also acknowledges that the U.S. political structure has, at times, perpetuated inequity at the expense of marginalized communities, who often bear the weight of decisions made without their stories at the forefront. We recognize that this election season, like those before it, has highlighted disparities in access to political power and representation. We know that similar struggles for equity and justice are present around the world, manifesting as colonialism, imperialism, ethnic and racial conflict, and other forms of systemic oppression.
Tangata Group reaffirms its commitment to values that guide our work globally:
-Recognizing and respecting the cultural, social, political, racial, historical, and economic contexts and rights of communities everywhere;
-Valuing the essence of humanity, with empathy for all;
-Encouraging full and equitable participation in every aspect of civic and social life;
-Promoting equitable treatment and honoring local perspectives and ways of understanding the human experience;
-Fighting for the elimination of all forms of discrimination, whether systemic, individual, or institutional; and
-Committing to decolonizing approaches and Indigenous methodologies in our work.
In our pursuit to make a positive impact, we recognize that we must do more to challenge systems of oppression and seek inclusive change in the United States and around the world. Tangata Group understands that it is not enough to be neutral; we must actively work for equity, equality, and challenging systems and partnerships where inequities or injustices are present. This includes examining our own privilege and redistributing power to those who have been historically marginalized.
While we recognize there is still much to be done, we remain dedicated to pursuing disability justice, equity, and inclusion.
In solidarity,
Tangata Group
